- Eibhlin A Ruin

- Eibhlin A Ruin

This haunting love song originated from a 14th century Irish poem by Cearbhaill O’Daliagh. The melody is derived from the tune Robin Adair by Lady Caroline Keppel (1739-1768). The lyrics were translated to English from the original Irish by Gerald Griffin (1803-1840).

Track 10 of The Wild Bird's Nest (2006)

I know a valley fair
Eibhlín a Rúin
I know a cottage there
Eibhlín a Rúin
Far in the valley shade, I know a tender maid
Flower of the hazel glade
Eibhlín a Rúin

Who in the song so sweet?
Eibhlín a Rúin
Who in the dance so sweet?
Eibhlín a Rúin
Dear are her charms to me
Dearer her laughter free
Dearest her constancy
Eibhlín a Rúin

Were she no longer true
Eibhlín a Rúin
What would her lover do
Eibhlín a Rúin
Fly with a broken chain
Far o'er the bounding main
Never to love again
Eibhlín a Rúin

Youth will in time decay
Eibhlín a Rúin
Beauty must fade away
Eibhlín a Rúin
Castles are sacked in war
Chieftains are scattered far
Truth is a fixed star
Eibhlín a Rúin

Traditional, arranged by Bruce Coughlan (SOCAN)
