Stirring Up Scotland Tour 2010 - July 12, 2010
Tiller's Folly - Stirring Up Scotland Tour 2010
The music of Tiller's Folly is uniquely representative of Canada's proud Scottish heritage. For over a dozen years, they have been collecting and interpreting Scots traditional music from a global perspective, tracing its many influences through North American music traditions. Performing the width and breadth of the North American continent, and throughout the United Kingdom.
This visit, Tiller's Folly will be touring in support of Bruce's solo release A Minstrel in Moray, inspired by the beautiful music, wonderful people, and amazing landscape that is Scotland.
In addition, we will be highlighting two new media projects.
Over Northern Skies, a song commissioned to celebrate 100 Years of Flight in Canada (2009), tells the story of how Scots-born inventor Alexander Graham Bell was responsible for Canada's first motorized flight. The song was used in a documentary celebrating the event.
Robbie McBeath: Bruce was commissioned by the Village of Kinlochbervie, Scotland to commemorate their local hero, Robert McBeath, VC. That song has become a collaboration with the Vancouver Police Pipe Band. A line from the song is engraved in a commemorative cairn in Kinlochbervie.

"Robbie McBeath"
November 20th 1917. World War 1 was raging in Europe. Entrenched in bitter warfare at the Battle of the Somme in France, a regiment of Seaforth Highlanders was pinned down by intense machine gun fire. Lance-Corporal Robert McBeath, from the small Sutherland village of Kinlochbervie, Scotland volunteered to attack the guns alone, armed only with a Lewis gun and revolver. Joined by a tank, McBeath attacked five machine gun nests in succession, capturing three officers and thirty enemy soldiers. For this heroic action Robert McBeath was awarded the Victoria Cross.
McBeath returned home to a hero's welcome. He married Barbara MacKay and soon after, emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, where he joined the Vancouver Police Department.
October 9th, 1922 Constable Robert McBeath was fatally shot while engaging in an arrest.
McBeath's funeral was one of the largest ever in Vancouver history. All stores and banks were closed and thousands of attended to pay their respect. The procession took twenty minutes to pass, and was led by Vancouver Police Inspector George Hood on horseback. He was followed by the Vancouver Police Pipe Band, the widow Barbara, the mayor and council members, 300 Masons, 80 Vancouver Police, 100 Vancouver Fire Fighters, 12 Royal Canadian Mounted Police, 50 Seaforth Highlanders, a contingent of Irish Fusiliers, Several hundred WW1 veterans, 40 members of BC Electric Railway, 12 of the Canadian Pacific Police, several hundred members of the Foresters, St. Andrews, and Caledonia Societies.

Tiller's really had a great weekend of playing were visited by old friends from as far away as Montana as well as Washington and Oregon. We made many new friends including lots of the fine musicians. One of the highlights was the jam with San Fran's Hounds after the last set Sunday night. Over all it was an incredible weekend and a lot of credit needs to go to Bill and Linda Gibbons at the Galaway Bay Pub. These pub owners actually love the music , How refreshing. Yay Bill and Linda!! Thanks to all the photographers for these photos, including Katherine Barrett, the Gothard Sisters, and William Swift.

Larry Knechtel had become a friend and we were looking forward to some upcoming shows we had booked with Larry before this tragic event. Larry's contributions to modern music are legendary as a member of the LA wrecking Crew and beyond and he was awarded the grammy for Simon and Garfunkel's classic Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Please note on our player Larry's fine keyboard contributions on both Tranquillity and Things I Haven't Done. Tiller's Folly would like send our sympathies to all the Knechtel family.
